They say that smell is the strongest connector to memory. It’s one of my favorite things when I catch the scent of something and it brings me right back to a happy memory. Sometimes it’s a cologne that reminds me of my late grandfather, or it could be a bouquet of flowers that reminds me of the flowers my family gave me after my first debut on stage in drama club. But sometimes it’s food. And let’s be real here, most of the time it’s food ;) This scent-memory connection thing
It’s magically delicious! Actually, there’s no magic involved in this one. This cake idea has been in the works for almost a year now! 365ish days ago, a friend of mine told me I had to watch a particular episode of a Netflix show called “A Chef’s Table: Pastry” where the pastry chef starring in the episode “invents” cereal milk. So I of course watched it with a pen and paper nearby to take notes (like the nerd that I am), and thought it was a pretty cool idea (I disagreed wi
Someone asked me last week why there was no tequila in my house. And gosh darn it, I couldn’t think of a single reason why there wasn’t any (the man candy suggested that it was because I drank it all. Gee thanks, dear.). Given that Feb. 22 is National Margarita Day, I knew that I needed to get some tequila STAT because how else was I supposed to celebrate properly? (Are y'all catching on to what one of my favorite movies just might be? I also put a GIF of it in last week's bl
Do you have a skill that you do so well that it's become second nature? That was me with several recipes I used to use on a daily basis, and I used to be able to make Italian meringue in my sleep. There was a time when I worked at a small French bakery in the middle of nowhere Louisiana, and I developed a line of 13 different flavors of macarons that were available daily, which meant that I made a lot of Italian meringue (I know most macaron recipes use French meringue but I
"I am a strong woman who is capable of many things, but restraining myself around chips and salsa isn’t one of them." Or any snack foods for that matter. Fortunately, I’m not much of a snacker so the only real time I encounter detrimental amounts of snack foods is when I’m at a restaurant. Or on Superbowl Sunday! Woohoo!! I don't know why, but I decided to go all out this year - I guess it’s kinda what I do now. In addition to the two desserts I made (I’ll get to those later)
I found that I’ve been a lot happier since I switched from drinking coffee in the morning to drinking orange juice. My doctor said that it’s because of all the Vitamin C and natural sugars, but honestly I think it’s the vodka. Ok ok ok, that’s not true at all - I still just drink coffee and wish it was boozy. But in all seriousness, who remembers those chocolate oranges from obscure places like World Market (and probably Walmart for all I know)? Full disclosure, I LOVE them!
Have I mentioned to you that I’m a nerd? I know, I’m sure that’s coming as a huge shock because in my writing I present myself as one of the coolest people on the planet. But in all actuality I am a Harry-Potter-obsessing, giggle-at-my-own-terrible-jokes, musical-theater-loving, recite-the-alphabet-backwards-and-in-French-because-I-can, look-at-this-science-stuff-isn’t-it-cool, read-extra-books-outside-of-class (or in my adult life, outside of Book Club) for-funsies type of n
It’s the most wonderful time of the year! At least in south Louisiana it is (and trust me we’re all singing this song right now!). Carnival has just begun, the city is brimming with excitement, and everything you can find to eat there has been dyed purple, green, and gold. Which means your tongue will be, too. Just embrace it because IT’S KING CAKE SEASON!!! I look forward to this season all year. And I think the fact that I’m such a traditionalist about my king cake it is wh
